The Deck

Imperfect Tarot is currently in progress. We’re letting the deck unfold through us in its own time, so we do not have an estimated date when it will be available for pre-order. We invite you to follow us on our website and Instagram for new cards and updates related to ordering!

Click on the links below or in the menu at the top of the page under “The Deck” to see more about those cards. Some of the cards are renamed, which is explained in the next section (“Deck Structure”).

Deck Structure

A core value of the Imperfect Tarot is to be empowering and liberating. Using the traditional names of “Major Arcana,” “Minor Arcana,” and “Court” cards enforces the gendered, hierarchical norms our deck seeks to evolve. We have thus renamed these cards as:
– Major Arcana -> Ethos
– Minor Arcana -> Existence
– Court -> Essence

Ethos cards capture beliefs and values- the intangible qualities such as Platonic Forms. Existence cards refer to more grounded concepts, actions, and states of being. The Essence cards capture certain qualities and energies the way that a tincture or essential oil provides a more potent form of an herb.

Suits. The four suits in our deck are:
The Suit of Nails [traditionally “Swords”]
– The Suit of Wands
– The Suit of Cups
– The Suit of Discs [traditionally “Pentacles”]

We chose to use nails instead of swords because nails can be used to build or to pierce, in much the same way that our minds can be used. Discs replace pentacles because pentacles are typically carved onto discs, and discs can also encompass coins, moons, circles, and other circular forms.

Essence Cards

[Traditionally called the “Court” cards] We have renamed the Essence cards in our deck as follows:
– Pages -> Spirits
– Knights -> Seekers
– Queens -> Anchors
– Kings -> Stewards

Spirits. Like our guides, the Spirit cards are playful elementals that are capable of seeing beyond our linear, material reality. The Spirits help us to show up in the present moment and engage with our lives in new and open ways.

Seekers. The Seekers embody the idea of a deep soul need for fulfillment, a yearning that drives them onward. The Seekers learn that the end goal is the journey itself, not the end.

Anchors. Anchors represent water, and these cards help us to provide a sturdy anchor to enter their deep waters. Through the Anchors, we can explore without losing who we are.

Stewards. The Stewards offer their skills and experience to help us navigate different areas of life. They help us to see where we are capable of offering our services for the benefit of the collective.

Deck History

Stephanie and Lindsay were both taking Samara Kasai‘s Tarot for Healing Justice course in summer 2020. One evening, Samara told Lindsay that they thought Lindsay would create a deck at some point. Lindsay laughed it off, but thankfully, Stephanie reached out shortly after and asked Lindsay if she wanted to work on a deck together! Lindsay said yes, and a beautiful partnership was born. Our first finished card was 2 of Discs. We spent some time brainstorming a name for our deck until at one point, Lindsay suggested naming it “Imperfect Tarot” to honor both creators’ journey with releasing perfectionism in creating this deck. We launched our Instagram in November 2020, our website in November 2021, and the rest is history! For more fun information on the history of Imperfect Tarot and our partnership, check out our podcast with Samara & Lalli on Intuitive Wellness here.
